Uf Liberal Arts and Sciencts Deans List Spring 2018

A liberal arts and sciences education is about breadth of learning. This idea is enshrined in the Academy'southward general education requirements, and further elaborated by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences' (CLAS) bones distribution requirements. CLAS believes that the all-time preparation for success draws deeply across the total range of the college's offerings. The Dean'due south Medal takes this principle beyond the bones minimums that are required of all students, and recognizes those CLAS graduates who accept gone above and across in their pursuit of knowledge in liberal arts and sciences. Earning the Dean's Medal affirms that medal winners accept non only undertaken a significant range of courses, merely have caused the range of skills and experiences valued past graduate and professional schools, organizations, employers, and communities.

About the Medal

Dean's Medal
The Dean'south Medal for Excellence in Liberal Arts and Sciences

The obverse embraces the breadth and body of a liberal arts curriculum. The torch of knowledge lights the book of learning that is rewarded with the laurel of education. The Latin words—diversity, scholarship and generosity—describe the gifts education brings.

The reverse of the medal names the medal effectually the rim and includes images from the Great Seal of Florida and the University of Florida's seal.

The medal volition be awarded with a gilded and white ribbon representing the BA and BS degrees conferred past the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

The Dean's Medal is awarded by awarding only. Graduating students will be able to apply for the Dean's Medal beginning in the drib/add together menses of the term in which they are graduating, and volition typically have until the mid-bespeak of that term to submit an application. The Dean'due south Medal application is online, and requires students to identify the specific courses taken at UF that meet each category for the Dean's Medal, and to explain the work that satisfies the experiential learning portion of the requirements. All Dean's Medal applications will be reviewed by the CLAS Academic Advising Center (AAC).

Winners will be celebrated at the Summer Dean'southward Medal Anniversary on Fri, August five, 2022, from x:00 – 11:00 a.yard. (location TBD). Winners unable to nourish the ceremony will be able to pick upwardly their medals in the Academic Advising Heart prior to graduation, in the expectation that students will wearable the medals at their commencement ceremony.

Rules for the Dean's Medal for Excellence in Liberal Arts and Sciences (both Two-Yr and Four-Twelvemonth)

  • All courses must be taken at the University of Florida.1
  • All courses must be offered by a unit of measurement/department in the Higher of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
  • All courses must be completed with a grade of "C" or higher or a grade of "Satisfactory" for S/U graded courses.
  • All courses must exist three or more credits.2
  • Any course used toward the CLAS Dean's Medal may overlap with courses used toward the completion of a major, pocket-size or document.
  • You may only apply for the CLAS Dean's Medal within your graduating semester.

Requirements for the CLAS Dean's 4-Year Medal (click to expand)

Applicable to students who matriculated to UF as first fourth dimension in college freshmen.

The Dean's Medal will be awarded to all four-yr undergraduate CLAS majors who have undertaken the following at the University of Florida:

Humanities: Successful completion of two CLAS-taught courses that satisfy the UF general didactics requirement (or that meet the subject field surface area requirements described here), one of which must be at the 3000-level or college.

Social and Behavioral Sciences: Successful completion of two CLAS-taught courses that satisfy the UF general educational activity requirement (or that meet the subject area requirements described hither), i of which must be at the 3000-level or higher.

Mathematics, Physical Sciences OR Biological Sciences: Successful completion of two CLAS-taught courses that satisfy the UF full general teaching requirement (or that run into the subject field area requirements described here).

International AND/OR Variety: Successful completion of four CLAS-taught courses that satisfy the UF general education requirement (or that encounter the field of study requirements described hither), 2 of which must be at the 3000-level or higher; these courses tin overlap with other courses applied toward the Dean's Medal.

Foreign Language: Successful completion of a two-semester sequence in a foreign language. Ii non-sequential language courses at the upper-division level would too count.

Professional person Advice: Successful completion of one course in professional person communication.4 Options include:

  • A University Writing Program course at the 2000-level or college
  • A three-credit Dial Heart for Written and Oral Communication course at the 2000-level or higher

Applicable to students who entered UF equally upper-division transfer students.

The Dean'south Two-Year Medal will be awarded to all undergraduate CLAS majors who entered UF every bit upper-division transfer students6, and who have undertaken the post-obit at the University of Florida:
