Family Back up Magistrates Offering Guidance for Court-involved Fathers

Judicial Panel Hosted by New Haven Healthy Start

New Haven (Feb.8) - Whenever a father stands before him in courtroom, Main Magistrate Michael L. Ferguson makes sure to enquire him if he has anything he would like to say.

"The all-time advice I can give is to speak up," said Ferguson, who oversees the Family unit Support Magistrate Courtroom system. "You know your situation better than anyone else. If y'all don't say your part, we won't know. If you lot encounter that things are not going your style, talk to the judge."

The Family Back up Magistrate Court is where child support and paternity cases are heard in Connecticut. Many of the men cycling through the court are in poverty, and they struggle to observe work considering of felony records and other obstacles.

The judicial panel was the latest in a serial of judicial forums organized by New Haven Healthy Offset to assistance court-involved fathers and families better understand how the court system works and abet for themselves.

Fathers and families in disputes over kid support, paternity, custody and other cases often appear in court without legal representation and have a express understanding of the process. "Don't sit down on the order. Act immediately," said Magistrate Gladys I. Nieves. "Bottom line, yous have to ask for it to alter. Y'all take to file the motions. You accept to make it front of the judge and say, 'My circumstances have inverse. I need a unlike club.'"

"A lot of my fathers get frustrated considering they don't understand the process," Moore said. "I can help them see that the process is there to brand sure that they exercise what they need to do for their kid.
